Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate the little studied work of Renato Castellani as a theatre director. Between 1944 and 1976 he directed one revue, two comedies and two operas, however critics (especially theatre critics) did not appreciate this side of his work, which, as such, has been almost entirely forgotten. The article reconstructs the five steps of Castellani's «theatrical journey», whose roots are traced back to the documentary, and subsequently discusses the connections between theatre and film direction.
