Abstract

The brainchild of Charles Schmitt, «History of Universities» (founded in 1981) was the first periodical devoted exclusively to the history of higher education. It was conceived as a journal with an international scope, which would firmly situate universities within broader intellectual and cultural contexts, as well as encourage comparative approaches to university history. Four decades later, while no longer the only journal devoted to university history, «History of Universities» remains the main venue for such scholarship in the English-speaking world, and the only regular international publication in the field.
