Abstract

The Nueva Canción Chilena flourished during the rowdy and exciting years that preceded and ushered in the Socialist government of Unidad Popular, led by Salvador Allende. Pioneered by Violeta Parra and Victor Jara, the movement brought to light an enormous patrimony of long forgotten music and caused the birth of a huge number of successful politically-conscious songs. Cracked down by the military junta seizing power in 1973, The Nueva Canción is still an admirable example of an uncompromising musical expression tied to social change and free from the pressures of the market
