Abstract

The media have a pivotal role in covering topics about the relationship between the European Union (EU) and its member states. The United Kingdom (UK), referred to as the «awkward partner», has had a turbulent relationship with the EU, frequently marked by debates surrounding national identity and the legitimacy of sovereignty. In this context, British newspapers are often perceived as highly attuned to the political dynamics between the UK and the EU, often portrayed as a «conflict». This highlights public dissent related to the «idea» of independence from a European continent dominated by German influence. The Brexit referendum of 2016 further exacerbated this division between the two sides
