Abstract

This paper, which comprises three sections, aims to provide an overview of the Instituto de Investigaciones sobre la Universidad y la Educación (Iisue) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Unam). First, it traces its origins and development from 1976 to the present day. Second, it provides an overview of its publications, and, finally, it summarises the nature of studies carried out until today in the colonial university of Mexico and the Catholic colleges of New Spain, as well as their ties with other institutions, in particular the Real Audiencia and the Church.
