«You're still a man unless someone more masculine and more top than you're shows off». The Construction of Gay Masculinities between Normalization, Complicity and Consumption

  • Abstract

Keywords: Gay Masculinities; Normalization; Critical Masculinities Theory.

The paper presents an overview of the main perspectives on social construction and representation of homosexual masculinities using critical masculinities theory. The analysis considers contemporary cultural representations of gay masculinities as hybrid phenomena that participate to the constitution of hegemonic classed and racialized (normative) masculinities. (Homo)normative masculinities contribute deeply to the process of the subordination of the masculine Other (and of women).
