Abstract

This article draws attention to key features of the Italian periodical "Civiltà delle Macchine", published from the 1950s through the 1970s. This journal was unique in the way it combined contemporary art, science, and technology. "Civiltà delle Macchine" was founded as the house organ of Finmeccanica, the large state-owned engineering enterprise. The multilingualism and international distribution of the journal were n line with the efforts of the Italian government towards European integration. "Civiltà delle Macchine" fully attained its particular character and style under the editorships of the poet-engineer Leonardo Sinisgalli and the mathematician- journalist Francesco Flores d'Arcais.
