Abstract

The essay focuses on how Tullio De Mauro tackled the issues of migratory linguistics: Italian emigration in the world, foreign immigration in Italy. In particular, the latter deals with the dialectic between the generalized diffusion of Italian into Italian society, the new arrangements that ensue with respect to the historical plurilingualism of Italian and dialects, the recent entry of the "immigrant languages" following the flows of immigration from abroad.
