Abstract
This paper points out an interesting occurrence of the term pape in a passage from the Breviloquium (c. 1203) by Boncompagno da Signa, therefore chronologically prior to Dante’s poem. This occurrence stands out from the others which are generally attached to the exegesis of Dante’s verse because it contextualizes the exclamation of amazement in a series of exemplary sentences of proverbial nature that depict scenarios at the crossroads between the apocalyptic and the grotesque.
