Through the comparison of some of the most innovative histories of the Italian Republic published after the end of Cold war era, the essay run over the most popular interpretations and representations about Italy as were presented in those years, while the country was facing an intricate political transition. The aim is also to reflect over the heuristic concept of «transition», focusing in particular on the historical transitions lived intensely by the historian themselves. In conclusion, the essay tries to answer to the crucial question: how biographical transitions and personal memories of the past affect historian while making history about his own time?
