Abstract

From 1989 onwards, the countries of central and Eastern Europe started building up open and democratic societies, adopting market principles and limiting the monopolistic role of the State in all sectors. With regard to the cultural and artistic field, although the situation is not homogeneous in these countries, it can be said that state cultural organizations are still prevalent compared to business and non profit organizations. Foundations are playing a very important role in trying to balance state and private sectors, and an example of that are the Soros Centres for Contemporary Arts, which are supported by the national Soros foundations. The aim of the Centres is to achieve social, political and economic changes also through cultural activities, which are considered a means to build up shared values and beliefs within society.
