Abstract

Transition towards a post-carbon urban future entails thinking about long timeframes and requires drastic changes of direction in current policies. Yet the uncertainty associated with change can often stifle action. Using visions as an instrument for strategic planning for a post-carbon urban future can help to generate a positive image of the transformations lying ahead; combined with a roadmap based on such visions and scenarios helps translate the envisaged and necessary transformations into feasible small-scale actions.
