Abstract

The study considers the recontextualization of Eugenio Montale in Sweden through an analysis of his translators. Starting out from the idea that the selection and translation of poems by a foreign author are actions closely bound to the habitus of the translator, the analysis takes into account the biographical data and the aesthetic ideals of the three major Swedish translators of Montale in order to examine their motives for translating the Genoese poet and their selections for the anthologies, published in the years 1960-75. The results show a Swedish Montale more inclined to nostalgic meditations, picturesque landscapes and a general vision less disenchanted than the Italian original.
