Abstract

The topic of the role of Christianity in the Italian city states during the medieval and Renaissance periods is discussed extensively in the first twenty volumes of the «Quaderni di storia sociale e religiosa». The scholars’ attention was paid to a wide range of sources and investigations, with a particular interest in the complex set of relationships among institutions, economic and political practices, religion and mentalities. In the «Quaderni», this interplay between Church and Society was never separated from the details of the life lived. The paper considers the main contributors to this historiography in Italy and abroad, along with some latest research prospects.
