Abstract

This is a study of LXX Amos 3:7. The Hebrew text describes the Lord «revealing his secret to his servants the prophets» and LXX declares that the Lord «reveals paideia to his servants the prophets». Why does the translator render «secret» as paideia? And what does paideia mean in this context? We address these questions by: 1) considering LXX Amos 3:7; 2) surveying recent studies of the meaning of paideia in LXX; 3) examining the use of paideia and its cognates in LXX Twelve; and 4) considering the references to paideia as prophetic discourse elsewhere in the LXX Prophets
