Abstract

This essay concerns the participation of foreign citizens among d’Annunzio’s volunteers. Through the analysis of the irredentist press, archives of d’Annunzio’s army and private memories, the paper examines the presence of foreign legionaries and how it influenced the international echo of the «Fiume exploit». The cases analyzed reveal a small participation of non-Italian volunteers, whose experiences was nevertheless combined with those of journalists, intellectuals and activists, creating the image of a cosmopolitan rebellion. The idealized image of the «foreign legionnaire» therefore appears as a myth with a significant influence on memories and historiography.
