Abstract

This paper reviews and evalutes recent studies on neuropsychology of autism and pervasive developmental disorders. Three main theoretical models are considered: theory of mind, executive function, central coherence. Their strenghts and weaknesses are discussed, in the light of empirical finding, looking for a possible integration of the three approaches. Their contribution is evaluted to our understanding of the clinical features: social abnormalities, language and communication impairment, stereotyped repetitive patterns of behaviour, general intellectual impairment and splinter skills. Some critical methodological points are identified, and new lines for future research are suggested.
