Abstract

The paper presents the work led in 2011 by the Cnel-Istat inter-institutional initiative for measuring the equitable and sustainable wellbeing in Italy. It first de- scribes the international debate over the measurement of wellbeing and progress and the relevance of a shared set of indicators in supporting policy making. Successively, the paper describes the work led by Cnel and Istat, also through a public consultation process, to reach a shared definition of wellbeing in Italy in twelve domains. It concludes with the definition of the methodological frame- work to be adopted in the choice and use of indicators.
