Abstract

The article analyses the understanding of caste in legal studies on India taking into account particularly the view of Indologists analysing traditional Hindu law. Caste is one of the more complex and controversial subjects of Indian studies and is approached from the perspectives of several disciplinary fields. Legal studies developed their own understanding of caste, with its own limits, particularly reliance and selective use of other fields' studies, bur possible opportunities, such as a more analytical perspective on the interaction between several normative orders and on the many elements that have a role in the making of law.
