Abstract

The essay analyses the gnoseological, anthropological and theological roots of Montaigne's conception of tolerance. Contrasting recent interpretations according to which the religious dimension of Montaigne's thought is irrelevant, or even absent, the Author provides an interpretation of the "Essais" whose aim is to stress both the importance of that dimension and the necessity of historicize Montaigne's understanding of tolerance.
