Abstract

The article focuses on Bessarabia’s legislative and judicial unification with the Kingdom of Romania after 1918. Following the region’s annexation, the Romanian government pushed for immediate unification by extending the Romanian civil and criminal codes. Nevertheless, Bucharest’s designs met with opponents in Bessarabia, including local Romanian nationalists, who fought to retain Russian regulations, at least partially. Despite the opposition, Bessarabia was legally integrated into the Kingdom within ten years. Integration brought the region modernization and improved the locals’ relations with justice.
