Abstract

On 30 June 1901, the role of the General Inspectors of the Italian Public Security was established. The essay deals with the analysis of the social profile of the General Inspectors on duty from 1901 to 1922 and highlights their employment methods, suggesting that their inclusion in the Italian police ranks was in fact a limitation, however partial, of the centre-periphery mediation role played by the Prefects.
