Abstract

Starting from the recent experience of the 5 Terre Environmental Resource Archaeology Project (2017-2020) in the Cinque Terre National Park, the paper deals with problems and potentialities in bridging archaeological and geographical-historical researches with environmental policies and the management of landscape and historical-environmental heritage. The first part of the paper presents the multi-proxy approach and the results of the 5T.ERA project, aimed to the improvement of environmental management policies of Cinque Terre. In the second part, archaeological and historical ecology investigation outputs are discussed and compared with other research approaches and results employed for the drafting of the National Park and UNESCO site management plans. In conclusion, by considering the difficulties in integrating in-depth analysis with current environment safeguarding and management schemes, the paper argues the need for a historical and archaeological approach to the study of past environmental systems and their effects on current ecology.
