Abstract

Interpretation of XVI century archival documents related to archeological research, clarify the architectural connotations of the Romanesque church and its urban setting. Between the original building and the overall space, presently a university lecture-hall, we discover a third different church built and demolished in the first half of the XVII century. Additionally, the more archaic phases of the continually evolving piazza of Sarzano are revealed. Overlooking the open sea, during the XII century, this was the urban space dedicated to large social gatherings, which had been sought in vain within the historic center of the town.
