Abstract

Library catalogues, particularly electronic ones, can be used in a deliberately casual way, in order to enhance the researcher's chance of encountering unlooked-for and disconcerting facts. Analyzing two cases, the author discusses the cognitive potential of such deliberate resort to chance in the preliminary stage of historical research.
